I'm in Shanghai 09.04.08

The first 3 days, I stayed in a hotel inside the ECNU (East China Normal University) campus. Now I'm staying with my host family. I moved in last night, and they are awesome. A mom(Ren Fu Di), dad (Yu Nian Guo) and a 23 year old son (Yu Zi Qiang). The son is pretty much the coolest guy ever! He's fluent in English and he loves hip hop. I went out with him today to this huge mall. 9 stories! yeah, a mall with 9 floors. Isn't that crazy. It would take you a week to see every store. I was shocked. I will take pictures next time I go.

Anyway, getting back to school. So far, we have been going to a bunch of meetings. Classes start this Monday. I'm pretty excited for all my classes. I'm taking Chinese for beginners II, a core culture course, Chinese Business practices, and the changing roles of women in Chinese History. Don't think I'm gay for taking the later. The other class I wanted was on the same time block as Chinese Business Practices.

Today was a pretty exciting day. I woke up at 6:30 after sleeping on the hardest bed of my life. It's a normal bed with no mattress. Instead of a mattress, there is wood and 2 inch padding on top of that wood. I could only manage to sleep with my head facing towards the ceiling. Nonetheless, It was a good night sleep because I was pretty tired. Anyway, so I woke up, ironed my shirt, pants, and sports coat because I was getting ready for an internship fair. While I was ironing my shirt, the mom and dad shockingly observed me ironing clothes, and they were surprised to see that I was so good at it. Just like Mexico, in China it is rare for a male to do any house chores like iron clothes. I walked to school, which is only a 10 minute walk. I'm one of the lucky home stay students. Some other students have to take the bus or the subway to get to school. So I got to the internship fair. There were 10-15 companies there, but only 4 that I was really interested in. I went to the four companies, and I think they really liked me. I'm confident that I'll get a couple of second round interviews. Let's hope I do. I still need t write my cover letters for each. Let's not forget I'm competing against students from Notre Dame, Harvard, Penn State, Johns Hopkins, etc. I still feel good about my chances though.

Right now, I'm just waiting for 9:30 to come. Yu Zi Qiang is going to take me out for a night in Shanghai. I can't wait. I'm also going to invite some of my peeps to come with us.

I'll post some sweet pictures next time. PEACE!
